Japan eSIM Guide: Unlimited vs Fixed Data (2026)
แชร์
Heading to Japan and not sure which eSIM to pick? VOYA's Japan eSIMs come in three types: unlimited plans for short trips, unlimited plans you can match to any trip length up to 30 days, and fixed total-data plans. This guide explains how they differ so you can choose quickly.
Quick pick
| Your trip | Plan | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 4, 7, 10 or 15 days, heavy data use | Japan eSIM – Unlimited Data / 4~15 Days | Unlimited data at full high speed for the whole trip |
| Any length from 1 to 30 days | Japan eSIM – PLUS | Unlimited data, pick the exact number of days |
| Light use, or you know how much data you need | Japan eSIM – 3GB~50GB Total | Pay for a set amount of data, 3 to 30 days |
1. Japan eSIM – Unlimited Data / 4~15 Days
Available for 4, 7, 10 or 15 days. Data is unlimited and stays at high speed for the whole plan, with no throttling. One limit to know: hotspot (tethering) is limited to 3GB, so this plan is best for using data on your phone itself.

2. Japan eSIM – PLUS (1~30 Days)
Choose 1 to 20 days, 25 days or 30 days, so you only pay for the days you travel. It is an unlimited data plan: your data won't run out, and you stay connected for the whole plan period.
3. Japan eSIM – 3GB~50GB Total
A fixed total-data plan on the KDDI/SoftBank networks. Choose 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 or 30 days and 3GB, 5GB, 10GB, 20GB, 30GB or 50GB. What happens when the data is used up depends on the size you pick:
- 3GB, 20GB, 30GB and 50GB: you stay connected at a reduced speed of 128kbps until the plan ends.
- 5GB and 10GB: data stops when it is used up.

Unlimited or fixed data?
If you use maps, translation apps and social media all day, or you are not sure how much data you will need, an unlimited plan removes the guesswork. If you mostly use Wi-Fi at your hotel and only need data for maps and messages, a fixed total-data plan can be enough – just remember that 128kbps is much slower than normal mobile data and is mainly useful for text messages.
How to set up your Japan eSIM
- Check your phone. It must support eSIM and be unlocked (not tied to one carrier).
- Buy and get your QR code by email. The email also includes the setup instructions for your plan.
- Read the activation instructions before installing. Some plans start counting days as soon as the eSIM is installed, so follow the instructions in your order email to decide when to install.
- Install with a Wi-Fi connection. Scan the QR code from your phone's mobile/cellular settings.
- On arrival, select the VOYA eSIM for mobile data and turn on Data Roaming for it. Allow a few minutes for it to connect.
FAQ
Can I keep my home SIM in my phone?
Yes. You choose which line is used for mobile data. Whether your home number can still receive calls and texts abroad, and what that costs, depends on your home carrier.
Do these plans include a Japanese phone number?
The plans are sold for mobile data. If you need a local number, calls or SMS, check the product page of the option you want before buying.
Can I delete the eSIM after my trip?
Keep it installed while you still need the plan – an eSIM can usually be installed only once, so deleting it early may mean you cannot use the remaining days.
What if it doesn't connect?
Check that the VOYA eSIM is selected for mobile data and that Data Roaming is on, then wait a few minutes. If it still doesn't work, connect to Wi-Fi and contact us on WhatsApp with the error you see.
